Lasers and optical devices are complex and require tight tolerances, increasing the likelihood of errors during manufacturing. Manual alignment takes too much time while cartesian or gantry robots lack flexibility and have limited ranges of motion. Hexapods are expensive and have limited motion ranges. The Meca500 robot, however, is capable of extremely precise movements, with a repeatability of five micrometers and one-micrometer position increments, and is highly flexible with six degrees-of-freedom (DOF), making it ideal for optics and photonics manufacturing. It can handle the complex shapes and workpieces necessary for the automation of optic and photonic assembly processes. The Meca500 is used in the manufacturing of products such as OEM optical modules, cameras, microscopes, laser systems, fiber optics communication systems, and spectroscopy systems, amongst others.
